ASSOCIATE SPOTLIGHT SERIES: AN INTERVIEW WITH MONET
January 17, 2025
In our Associate Spotlight series, we are highlighting associates across the company who are shaping our community and who embody our Life at Centric philosophy every day.
Meet Monet Valdez, Senior Merchandise Manager, Joe’s Jeans Men’s and Men’s & Women’s Off-Price (RTW + Denim). Monet has been with Centric for three years, bringing her creativity and passion for learning. Her dedication and ability to navigate complex projects have made her a valued contributor to the team.
How did you become passionate about your career and/or choose this career path?
My passion for this career began in college when I majored in fashion design. Learning about garment construction, fabrics, and textiles sparked my fascination with the industry. I was also inspired by the creativity and talent of my peers, who taught me so much through collaboration. I launched my career at a women’s contemporary brand startup in Orange County, where I gained invaluable experience by working across multiple departments. This hands-on exposure shaped my deep understanding of the industry and solidified my passion for this career path.
What is one quality that you bring to your role that you think makes you stand out?
I’m a natural-born helper! I never say no to helping a teammate with anything to get the job done. I also love to problem-solve. When challenges arise, I view them as opportunities to find efficient and effective solutions.
Can you provide examples of instances where you have taken on stretch assignments?
Taking on my role at Joe’s nearly three years ago was a stretch assignment. Coming from a women’s denim and contemporary background, I had limited experience with the men’s denim industry or men’s fashion in general. I knew this role would have a steep learning curve, but I embraced the challenge. Over the past three years, I’ve gained a deep understanding of the men’s denim industry and how it differs from women’s. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’ve truly enjoyed learning every aspect of it
What is a current project you’re working on that is especially exciting for you?
Currently, we’re undertaking a complete transformation of the Joe’s Men’s business. With Greg, our new design director, leading the way, we’ve introduced a range of new updates for our Joe’s customers, including new denim fits, fabrics, more authentic denim, luxe ready-to-wear fabrics, updated vendors, and revamped trim and hardware. It’s a full reimagining of who the Joe’s man is. The launch is set for Spring ‘25, and the collection looks fantastic. Our wholesale partners have shown strong support and investment in this revamp, and we’re eager to see how it performs once it hits the floors!
Reflect on a professional success story that you take pride in.
One professional success I’m particularly proud of is launching ready-to-wear (RTW) for the Joe’s Men’s and Women’s off-price channel. This project was a true labor of love, requiring hard work and plenty of trial and error. I collaborated closely with our VP of Production and Off-Price Designer to develop a seasonally appropriate, Joe’s-adjacent line tailored to our Nordstrom Rack customers. By leveraging best sellers from our full-price line and creating similar silhouettes with competitively priced fabrics, we successfully launched the women’s collection in Spring ‘24. It’s been a huge success and continues to evolve, making it a rewarding project to be part of.
What’s something surprising that not many people know about you?
One surprising thing about me is my weekend side hustle as a wedding planner! I spend many weekends collaborating with brides on menu tastings, dress fittings, venue scouting, and coordinating weddings. I love the creativity and beauty of the planning process and seeing everything come together perfectly on the big day is incredibly fulfilling.
